The video work ’35 I can’ts’ was a collaborative work with performance artist Jayne Cherry. We wanted to examine the story of Cinderella’s glass shoes within the context of domestic violence. I created ‘glass slippers’ for Jayne to walk in and we worked with the statistic that a women will be assaulted 35 times before she phones the police. They were heavy and cumbersome and described how hard it is for women to leave abusive relationships. Jayne, in a very personal performance took 35 steps ‘towards the light’, wearing a headress she created herself describing the ‘fog’ she felt she was under during the time she was in an abusive relationship.
Alison Lowry is a glass artist living and working from her studio, ‘Schoolhouse Glass’ in Saintfield. In 2009 she graduated from the University of Ulster with a first class Honors degree in Art and Design. Since then she has won numerous awards including first place in the category, ‘Glass Art’ at the Royal Dublin Show in 2015 and 2009, the Silver medal at the Royal Ulster Arts Club’s Annual Exhibition in 2010, the Warm Glass Prize in 2010 and 2011 and more recently the Bronze Award at Bullseye Glass’ ‘Emerge’ exhibition. Alison exhibits both locally and internationally and her work is held in several public collections; with the National Gallery of Ireland recently accquiring a large pate de verre vessel for the ‘Contemporary Craft Collection’ and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland recently made a forth purchase for their collection.
Jane Cherry has been influenced and affected by her physical and emotional surroundings from a young age. Unpicking and re-examining how she considered trauma, grief, abuse and pain and how best to perceive and take back control, have been her main focus for making work. Graduating from Ulster University in 2011 was a culmination of many years studying the human condition as an artist, qualified nurse, organic farmer and garden designer.
Collaborating with performance artists, glass sculptors and fibre craftspeople continue to draw out new lines of thought which result in work which she imbues with clues, to assist in early recognition of, avoidance of and healing from pain inflicted by others and the uncertainty and perpetual pain it causes .
